Taxidermy at Surry Community College

Most people look forward to the weekend staying at home, going fishing or doing something other than going to work. Well not me!  I look forward to going to work each week. OK I'm not mowing yards or digging ditches, but I teach the art of  taxidermy at Surry Community College and we have fun!!!
For the past 9 years or so I have had the pleasure of teaching some of the finest folks from all over the U.S. and have made a lot of friends.

At present the course is taught in Pilot Mountain, NC at the Surry Community College's Pilot Center which is a spin off of the main campus in Dobson.
The town of Pilot is off Hwy 52  between Winston-Salem and Mount Airy, NC.

The course consists of four parts and are taught in two semesters or two 5-6 month periods.
The classes are "Big Game and Birds" which usually runs from January to June and the second, "Fish and Life-Size",  usually starts in August and runs through December,

If you are interested in taxidermy and would like to start a small business or a hobby give Surry a call at this number 336-386-3618 and ask for info.

Some of the students working on their mounts.

Assistant Instructor Teddy Speas and student Richard Mock talking over the process of mounting a spruce grouse that Richard had harvested on one of his many hunts throughout the United States.

Teddy (top of pic) is one of my former students and has been hired as a assistant instructor after working hard and completing the course for several years. Teddy opened  his own full time shop (Rural Hall Taxidermy, Rural Hall, NC) and he has been quite a success.

Many of my students will come back for several years and continue to learn more. You see, you can never learn all that there is to know about taxidermy because there is always a new challenge in every mount.

Surry offers a class during the week on Wednesday and Thursday nights from 6-10 pm for those who have come through the beginner class but want to continue to learn and anything goes. Most of the time we may have ten different mounts going on at once, so again if you are  interested just call and sign up.

In the spring Surry also puts on a three day event called the Surry Community College Taxidermy Mini Course.  The Mini Course has seminars, competitions, and a large trade show which consists of a gym full of vendors from all over the country. Some of the companies that attend are McKenzies, Jim Allred, Vandykes, Head Quarters and so on.  So come with great expectations and lots of money.
This year the event will be May 16-18, 2013 in Dobson, NC.  For info call again 336-386-3618

In the next few weeks on my blog, I'll be sharing more about the mini-course.

So hope to see you soon!
Rick

In the last post I made I was talking about the taxidermy course at Surry Community College and had mention the taxidermy mini course. Well I'm back to make a new bog about the great success we had at Surry this spring.
The numbers was down a little as far as the number of students attending, but the course's were great and the triad show was as usual very, very good as expected.
The numbers in competition was up this year and had over a hundred entries with some of the best taxidermy you will see anywhere. Many of my students tried their hand in competition for the first time and most placed for the first time.

Here are some pictures of this years mini course.
